Jail Matrons in Los Angeles
On May 5, 1923, Mrs. George W. Shehi wrote a humble letter to Los Angeles County Sheriff William Traeger. In the letter, Mrs. Shehi requested the sheriff's support, as she sought a retirement from the county for her 16 years of service as jail matron “with one half my salary as pension.” She went on to state that
I feel justified in making this request…. For nearly seven years I was the only matron appointed by law; consequently during all that time my only opportunity for leaving the department to obtain fresh air and outdoor exercise was when my daughter relieved me, which she did at no expense to the County.
On July 10 Sheriff Traeger forwarded Mrs. Shehi's letter to the Civil Service Commission, who sent ...
