Elderly Victimization, Community Policing Strategies for
As individuals age, their fear of crime and of becoming a victim increases. While older adults can be the target of specific types of financial crimes and identity theft, the statistical reality is that as people age, they are less likely to be victimized. Still, as the number of older adults increases, the need to protect this population also increases. Greater efforts are being made within communities across the United States to address fear of crime, decrease potential vulnerabilities, raise awareness of possible sources of victimization, and provide referrals for intervention, counseling, and other pertinent services. Law enforcement officials are playing a significant role in these community-based initiatives. This entry discusses several such efforts and initiatives.
